Recently, a vegan Reddit user posted on the forum r/Vegan asking if people ever make exceptions or if they are a “strict” vegan after someone asked them the same question.
The user explained that they recently started a new job and has been asked if they ever make exceptions or if they are a “strict” vegan.
“I really feel like I don’t even understand this question anymore, and I find it curious that I’ve been asked this more than once.”
The user went on to explain that they view the “flesh and secretions of animals that others see as commodities and food in such a different way that it wouldn’t even cross my mind to make an “exception”. Although they grew up eating dairy, eggs and meat as a regular part of their diet, once they decided to go vegan, it was easy, and they didn’t miss it at all.
“I’m proud when I can respond that I am “strictly” vegan (although i think this is inaccurate because it stems from a misunderstanding that veganism is a diet rather than an applied philosophy/worldview)”
Some users in the comments section agreed with the poster and others said that they get why the question was asked.
One user said: “So, I would just say no. I just don’t have a taste for meat anymore. Don’t get defensive. Maybe you’re the first vegan they’ve known.”
Another added: “I think you’re on point, it comes from a mistake belief that it’s a diet but to play the fool I would say, something like, yes, unfortunately most medicine sold in this country has animal products on them and if I need it, I don’t have a choice.”
Another wrote: “I don’t think it’s an unreasonable question, but it is really vague because they haven’t clarified what they consider an “exception”, and its also a false dichotomy because even “strict” vegans make exceptions. Some vegans make exceptions to take painkillers or contraceptives. Others make exceptions to consume something containing refined sugar. Others make exceptions to buy a car.”
What do you think? Do you ever make ‘exceptions?’ What would you respond if someone asked you this question?
