We’ve all heard the saying that “change is the only constant,” right? Well, the food industry is no exception! Prime Roots, an innovative start-up founded by Forbes 30 Under 30 awardees, Kimberlie Le and Joshua Nixon, is shaking things up with its range of plant-based deli meats. The duo recently announced a whopping $30 million Series B funding haul, pushing the company’s total funding to an impressive $50 million. Their mission? To redefine the traditional deli experience with a sustainable twist.

Prime Roots is all about breaking barriers. They’re using the unique qualities of koji mycelium – the thread-like structure of fungus – to recreate the texture of meat. Their offerings include a range of alternatives like cracked pepper turkey, black forest ham, hickory bacon, salami, and pepperoni. What’s even more impressive? They’re not simply throwing together off-the-shelf plant-based proteins. Instead, they’re infusing traditional deli methods with innovative techniques to deliver an authentic experience.
From an environmental perspective, Prime Roots’ meats are a game-changer. Traditional livestock farming contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and uses a significant portion of agricultural land. However, Prime Roots’ methods are reported to be 89% to 92% more sustainable than conventional meats, reducing emissions and land usage. Plus, their plant-based meats are nitrate, preservative, cholesterol, soy, and wheat-free and have a longer shelf life than traditional deli meats – a win-win for our health and the planet!
But it’s not all smooth sailing. Recent reports suggest that consumer interest in plant-based alternatives might be cooling off. Companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Meat have faced significant challenges. However, Prime Roots believes they’re just beginning a cycle of innovation and adoption.
Le, undeterred by the challenges, is optimistic. She believes the recent funding will help Prime Roots expand its team and clientele. “The category is going through an expansion phase with more innovation,” Le says. “Plant-based is just at the beginning of delivering on what consumers are truly asking for and demanding.”
How about we give plant-based deli meats a try? Change starts with us! As consumers, we can shift market trends and encourage more sustainable food options. Let’s use that power to Support innovation and push for a more sustainable future!
