It’s been said that it doesn’t take anything away from a person to be kind to an animal, but sadly, it seems that despite this beautiful idea many people do not see the merits of extending their compassion to our four-legged friends. To animal lovers, the idea that someone could not feel the same sympathy or desire to help an animal in need is absolutely mind-boggling, however, we see plenty of instances of animals being abused or mistreated that prove otherwise. While this is certainly the case for domestic animals like cats and dogs, it is overwhelmingly so for farm animals.
Unlike dogs and cats, who are viewed as our beloved companions and best friends, farm animals are often seen only as “food.” These animals are afforded less regard and respect in our society – relegated to a class of “non-feeling” and “non-important” beings that exist solely for the sake of our consumption. Consequently, we subject these animals to horrific conditions in factory farms where they are bred, born, pumped with feed and fattened, then quickly sent to slaughter. Many animals live their entire, albeit short, lives without experiencing fresh air or sunshine, and spent their days in a constant state of fear and stress.
What many people don’t realize is that cows, chickens, sheep, pigs, and goats are not, in fact, “stupid” animals who don’t care about their fate. To the contrary, these animals are highly intelligent and experience emotions in a very similar to humans. Knowing this, it seems absurd that we would continue to subject them to such pain and suffering in their lives. Luckily, there are many people who recognize this and actively work to help farm animals and change our perception of these creatures. Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary is stacked with wonderful people who have committed their lives to changing the world for farm animals.
The sanctuary has seen an influx of orphaned or sickly lambs in the past few months, and they have gone above and beyond to ensure each animal is given the care and love they need to thrive.
This sweet little lamb is one of many who have been carried through the doors of Edgar’s Mission – and he certainly won’t be the last. While the story behind how a such a wee one, who appears to still have the umbilical cord attached, came to be so dirty and in need of help is yet unknown, we can rest assured his days of trouble are behind him.
With the help of this incredible team, this lamb will be given all the love and treatment needed to help him grow up big and strong. Once he is able, he’ll likely be outfitted with a sweater, a teddy bear to cuddle with, and soon be introduced to the herd of rescued lambs that calls the sanctuary home. This little one will want for nothing and experience the true joy that life has to offer.
As the Edgar’s Mission logo says “If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others … why wouldn’t we?”
