In the heart of Indonesia’s third-largest city, Bandung, a remarkable story of environmental stewardship has emerged. What began as a response to the devastation caused by flooding has evolved into a movement that not only cleans up rivers and beaches but also ignites a nationwide battle against pollution. The Pandawara group, composed of five young men in their early twenties, has become local heroes, garnering a massive following on social media and inspiring countless others to join their crusade for cleaner waterways.

The origin of the Pandawara group can be traced back to 2022 when a series of floods, triggered by clogged rivers choked with rubbish, inflicted damage upon their homes. In response to this calamity, the five friends banded together, naming themselves after the five Pandawara princes of Indian folklore, symbolizing their unity and determination. The term “wara,” meaning bearers of good news, was added to their name, reflecting their aspiration to bring positive change to their community.
Harnessing the power of modern technology, the Pandawara group established a presence on TikTok with the handle @pandawaragroup. Their page features a collection of over 100 short videos showcasing their cleanup efforts along rivers and beaches. These videos have amassed millions of views and garnered over 100 million likes, making them online celebrities-slash-activists in their own right. Their journey from local volunteers to national inspirations is a testament to the influence of social media in shaping public consciousness.
The Pandawara group’s work addresses a pressing issue in Indonesia – the mounting problem of waste and pollution. The Greater Bandung area, where they operate, generates a staggering 2,000 tons of waste daily. Unfortunately, 10 to 20% of this waste does not make it to proper landfills, often ending up in rivers and exacerbating Pollution. The enormity of the waste issue is mirrored across the country, where millions of tons remain unaddressed. This crisis prompted Pandawara to take action, focusing on identifying rivers with urgent trash problems to prevent further flooding.
Pandawara’s modest beginnings eventually led to partnerships with government officials, propelling them into the role of influential change agents. Their reach extended beyond their neighborhood, as they organized cleanups on various Indonesian islands. A landmark event was their cleanup effort in Lampung, Sumatra, where they collected an impressive 300 tons of waste from a beach. This event attracted thousands of volunteers, demonstrating the growing momentum of their movement.
Beyond their cleanup initiatives, Pandawara has embraced their role as educators. Through their social media platforms, they aim to raise awareness about Pollution, particularly among the younger generation. By leveraging its online presence, Pandawara strives to empower Gen Z with knowledge and inspire them to take active steps to combat Pollution. This highlights the ripple effect that a small group of passionate individuals can have in inspiring a nationwide shift in mindset.
