Americans may want to think twice before reaching for that glass of milk. According to a recent Boing Boing article by Ellsworth Toohey, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has quietly suspended its milk safety testing program following a mass layoff of 20,000 Health and Human Services (HHS) employees.

The layoffs, reportedly orchestrated by billionaire Elon Musk in collaboration with the current administration, have left key public health roles vacant—effectively halting routine tests for harmful pathogens in dairy products, including dangerous contaminants like listeria and Cyclospora. The FDA’s testing program, which served as a vital line of defense against foodborne illnesses, was a crucial tool for keeping contaminated milk off store shelves.

Despite reassurances from HHS that the shutdown was “already planned,” critics argue the decision puts consumers at risk while stripping away basic food safety measures. The move comes amid broader deregulation efforts that have already raised eyebrows across the environmental and public health sectors.

For dairy farms, the message is equally bleak: why invest in safety if oversight is optional? Without proper checks, large-scale dairy operations could now cut corners with little consequence, pushing ethical producers further to the margins.

It’s a troubling sign of what happens when government watchdogs are defunded and food safety becomes a political afterthought.

Now more than ever, it’s time to ditch dairy and opt for safer, sustainable plant-based alternatives. Almond, oat, soy, and hemp milks are not only kinder to animals and the planet, they’re also less likely to come with a side of parasites. Supporting cruelty-free, environmentally conscious products is one small but powerful way to push back against this wave of deregulation—and protect your health in the process.
