A new book suggests that a little-known fatty acid could be key to healthier aging. According to Longevity.Technology’s Eleanor Garth, Dr Stephanie Venn-Watson’s The Longevity Nutrient reveals how C15:0, or pentadecanoic acid, may help maintain cellular health and resilience.

Dr Venn-Watson, a veterinary epidemiologist and former U.S. Navy researcher, discovered C15:0 while studying dolphins. She found that dolphins aging more healthily had higher levels of this saturated fat. Through further research, she linked C15:0 to critical cellular functions like protecting mitochondria, reducing inflammation, and strengthening cell membranes, all of which decline with age.

C15:0 naturally occurs in full-fat dairy and some fish, but modern dietary trends have largely eliminated it. Venn-Watson warns that this reduction may be contributing to what she calls “Cellular Fragility Syndrome,” potentially affecting a third of the global population. This syndrome, though still a concept, highlights problems like oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction—major players in aging and disease.

Importantly, the book doesn’t advocate for a return to high-fat diets. Instead, it highlights targeted supplementation as a safer way to restore C15:0 levels. Early clinical trials show promising results, with improvements in liver function, cholesterol, and red blood cell health after supplementation. However, as The Longevity Nutrient notes, more long-term human studies are needed to fully confirm its benefits.

Dr Venn-Watson’s work offers a refreshing perspective on the role of specific nutrients in aging, moving beyond the usual focus on high-profile molecules like NAD+ or metformin. Her dolphin-inspired discovery challenges old assumptions about fats and opens a new path for improving longevity naturally.

If nature holds the secrets to healthy aging, shouldn’t we listen? Embracing cleaner, plant-based diets and supporting cellular health through natural means like C15:0 could be part of a kinder, healthier future. Let’s prioritize nutrition that protects our bodies and our planet.
