Robert F. Kennedy Jr., head of the Department of Health and Human Services (H.H.S.), has laid off most of the agency’s communications teams, raising serious concerns about public health. According to The New York Times’ Maggie Astor, Kennedy had promised “radical transparency” when he took office in February. However, the cuts — part of a mass layoff by the Trump administration — targeted staff responsible for sharing crucial health information with the public.

These employees weren’t just press officers. Many worked behind the scenes to translate complex scientific research into clear, accessible advice on topics like food recalls, disease outbreaks, and safe medication practices. Several former employees, including Chanapa Tantibanchachai of the FDA, argue that Kennedy’s decision to centralize communications will dilute essential subject-matter expertise and delay life-saving information.

The layoffs also removed specialists who handled urgent health threats. For example, Alex Saint, a former FDA communications specialist, recalled how her team prevented contaminated cough syrup from reaching the U.S. during a 2022 crisis. Without specialized teams, she and others worry that critical warnings might not reach the public in time.

Critics like Gillian SteelFisher of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health warn this move is a “profound loss for public health.” Experts fear that with less trusted information available, confusion could rise, putting lives — both human and animal — at risk.

This unsettling trend is a reminder that access to clear, science-backed information is vital for protecting not just ourselves but the environment and all living beings. Now more than ever, we must stay informed, Support independent science, and push for transparency. Choosing plant-based living and supporting policies that protect people, animals, and nature are powerful steps we can all take today.
