In a recent interview, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made several claims about the ongoing measles outbreak in West Texas that are raising eyebrows across the scientific and public health communities. As reported by The New York Times’ Teddy Rosenbluth, Kennedy suggested that poor diets and weakened immune systems—not the lack of vaccinations—were the main reasons for the outbreak.
Kennedy also cast doubt on the safety of the measles vaccine, asserting that injuries from it are more common than widely believed. This contradicts decades of peer-reviewed research showing that the measles vaccine is both safe and highly effective. He went further, promoting fringe remedies like cod liver oil and praising “miraculous” recoveries through antibiotics and steroids—neither of which cure measles.
The outbreak has already infected nearly 200 people in a largely unvaccinated Mennonite community in Gaines County, Texas, and tragically resulted in the first U.S. measles death in 10 years. Another suspected death has been reported just over the border in New Mexico.
While Kennedy did mention vaccination, he framed it as a personal choice—despite the overwhelming evidence that high vaccination rates are the best defense against highly contagious diseases like measles.
This kind of rhetoric risks undermining public health, especially when it comes from someone in such a powerful position. Promoting nutrition and wellness is important, but it should never replace science-backed medicine, especially when lives are on the line.
If we want a future where children grow up healthy and safe, we must listen to science, Support plant-based nutrition for strong immune systems, and defend proven public health tools like vaccines. Protecting people and the planet means choosing compassion, facts, and responsibility.
