Health care in the U.S. remains so expensive that millions of Americans are going into debt just to stay alive. According to CBS MoneyWatch and reporter Megan Cerullo, a staggering 31 million U.S. adults—12% of the adult population—borrowed a combined $74 billion in 2024 to cover medical expenses. What’s even more shocking? Many of them already had health insurance.
The findings come from a Gallup and West Health survey of over 3,500 people and paint a bleak picture. Almost one in three respondents said they were “very concerned” that a major health event would plunge them into medical debt. Tim Lash, president of West Health, explained that families are being forced to make heartbreaking decisions—borrowing money, skipping rent, or buying less food—just to afford basic care.
Younger adults are hit hardest. Nearly 1 in 5 people aged 18 to 28 reported borrowing money for health-related costs. Comparatively, just 2% of people over 65 did the same, likely thanks to more comprehensive Medicare coverage.
The survey also highlights massive disparities in who bears the financial burden. As of mid-2024, Americans owed at least $220 billion in medical debt, with health care bills remaining one of the top causes of personal bankruptcy.
This isn’t just about numbers—it’s about people being forced to choose between health and survival. Lash emphasized the need for systemic reforms to reduce costs at the individual level, saying, “These circumstances… shouldn’t be the condition moving forward.”
If we truly care about human and animal life, we need a system that protects all species—including our own. Prioritize your health in ways that don’t fuel these broken systems.
