The all-meat approach to eating has been gaining traction online, with some influencers praising its rapid weight loss benefits. Supporters claim this high-protein plan—focusing on meat, eggs, and dairy—can boost energy, sharpen mental clarity, and melt off pounds. Yet the absence of fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based foods has health experts on high alert. Protein overload and saturated fats could be trouble for the heart, while a lack of essential nutrients risks throwing the body out of balance.

Doctors from the Indiana University School of Medicine are particularly concerned about kidney stones. In one case, a 68-year-old man followed a carnivore diet discovered on YouTube, lost 24 pounds, and then developed three different types of stones. Once he quit, his issues subsided, and his kidney health returned to normal. Similar concerns arose in Florida, where a man ended up with bizarre yellowish nodules due to dangerously high cholesterol. Even popular podcaster Joe Rogan wasn’t immune—he first raved about the diet’s energy-boosting benefits before coming clean about experiencing explosive diarrhea. These troubling side effects highlight how extreme dietary choices can backfire in surprising ways.

Still, a 2021 Harvard study found that some people reported satisfaction and health improvements from going carnivore, while psychiatrist Dr. Georgia Ede believes it can help identify food sensitivities and break stubborn eating habits. But heavy reliance on animal products can pose risks to both personal wellness and the planet, considering the strain that livestock production places on natural resources. Many experts advocate for balanced, fiber-rich diets that include fresh produce to lower the odds of kidney stones and other complications.

It’s time to champion kinder, more sustainable habits for ourselves and the world. Consider swapping at least a few meat-heavy meals for plant-based options to reduce your environmental footprint and protect your health.
