As wildfires rage and heat waves intensify, scientists have been racing to understand how Climate change affects our health. But that work could get much harder. According to reporting by Maggie Astor for The New York Times, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is moving to stop funding research into climate-related health impacts under the Trump administration’s current leadership.

The policy shift means researchers studying how events like wildfires and extreme heat affect everything from heart disease to birth outcomes may lose essential funding. Dr. Shohreh Farzan from USC’s Keck School of Medicine warned this decision could block vital insights into early health risks—like how heat exposure impacts young children or how wildfire smoke might contribute to cancer and cardiovascular problems.

The decision is part of a broader directive at the Department of Health and Human Services to deprioritize Climate change and other topics, including gender identity and diversity. Despite the growing scientific consensus that extreme weather is already worsening public health, federal funding is being frozen or withdrawn.

Researchers at institutions like the University of Cincinnati and Oregon State University say their groundbreaking work may be shut down entirely. Private foundations simply can’t match the scale of government grants, leaving U.S. scientists “flying blind” as they try to tackle worsening environmental health threats.

With extreme weather already here, we can’t afford to ignore the human toll. Now is the time to Support climate research, demand policy change, and shift our own habits—like reducing meat, avoiding fossil fuels, and standing with Environmental justice communities. Health is a climate issue, and every choice matters.
