If you’ve been sneezing non-stop this spring, you’re not alone. According to a report from Vox, pollen counts have hit record highs across the U.S., with Atlanta and Houston logging their worst numbers ever. Scientists say Climate change is fueling this allergy explosion by causing plants to produce more pollen for longer periods.
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) warns that 2025 will be another brutal year for allergy sufferers. Kenneth Mendez, CEO of AAFA, explained that tree pollen is emerging about 20 days earlier than it did three decades ago. Rising carbon dioxide levels not only make plants grow faster but also pump out more pollen, creating a vicious cycle that’s hard to break.
The impacts aren’t just about watery eyes and runny noses. Seasonal allergies cost billions of dollars each year in lost workdays, doctor visits, and medications. Even more alarming, tree pollen allergies alone cause up to 50,000 emergency room visits annually, according to one study. And as pollen counts keep climbing, even people without a history of allergies are starting to feel the effects.
Urban areas offer little escape. Cities tend to be warmer and more polluted, making allergies worse. Wildfires, storms, and mold growth are adding new threats, especially in underserved communities that may struggle with resources to recover from climate disasters.
The bottom line? Allergy seasons are getting longer and harsher—and they’re a visible, sneezy reminder of the growing climate crisis.
The best thing we can do is tackle the root cause: fossil fuel emissions. Choosing plant-based foods, cutting down on driving, and supporting renewable energy are simple steps that add up. Let’s work together for cleaner air, fewer sneezes, and a healthier planet for all living beings.
