Katy Perry is facing serious backlash from fans and environmental advocates after joining Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin space mission this week. The pop star and five other high-profile women, including Lauren Sánchez and Gayle King, took part in the 11-minute suborbital flight, which Perry claimed was “for the benefit of Earth.”
The internet wasn’t having it. Critics quickly pointed out the environmental toll of space tourism and called out the irony of advocating for the planet while participating in one of the most resource-intensive activities possible. According to BuzzFeed’s Leyla Mohammed, celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski slammed the mission, saying, “That’s end-time s***… Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space… For what?”
What truly reignited the fire was the resurfacing of a 2015 video featuring Perry as a UNICEF ambassador, urging people to fight “man-made Climate change.” In the clip, she highlights climate disasters in the Philippines and Bangladesh, stressing how children are the first victims. “Things will worsen,” she warned. “Please join me in supporting UNICEF to change the forecast for children.”
Now, critics are calling Perry a “walking oxymoron” and accusing her of hypocrisy. One viral tweet read: “Katy Perry 2015: Lectures us icky regular people on Global Man-Made Climate Change. Katy Perry 2025: Takes an 11-minute space tourism joy ride that probably produced more carbon than I have in my entire lifetime.”
mIf we want a livable future, we have to start holding everyone—especially those with massive platforms—accountable. True climate action isn’t about flashy statements or PR-driven space trips. It’s about cutting emissions, choosing sustainable lifestyles, and refusing to glorify industries that burn through resources for spectacle. Let’s stay grounded—literally—and push for real change.
