A family in South Carolina is mourning the death of their beloved family dog after the dog was shot by a neighbor, then discarded in a trash pile by an animal control officer.

The English bulldog escaped from the backyard and was shot by a neighbor, according to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office. The mysterious circumstances surrounding the death have led to the animal control officer being fired from his job.

The dog’s owner, Caroline Perry, has tried to speak with the neighbor but has not had any success.

“Trying to figure out what happened,” Perry told WBTW News13 “Why did this happen? Why did you shoot the dog?”

The neighbor apparently told the sheriff’s office and animal control that he feared for his life, which is why he shot the dog.

“George was short, fat and kind of lazy. He wasn’t aggressive at all,” Perry said.

The sheriff’s office said that the neighbor can not be charged, but the animal control officer has been fired because of his improper disposal of the body.

“They said the animal control officer shouldn’t have taken the animal, that the neighbor or owner should have taken possession of that animal,” Perry said.

Perry is rightfully frustrated by the situation and said it took weeks to get the facts surrounding her beloved dog’s death.

“It just doesn’t sit right with me, the way it was handled because they waited so long to tell us and wouldn’t give us the body cam footage,” Perry told the news outlet. “It took them three weeks to get us a copy of the sheriff’s office’s report where they initially came out to this person’s house. We just want to know exactly what happened to our dog and we just don’t understand how a neighbor, who lives right next door, could shoot animals that were obviously somebody’s pet.”

We hope that those responsible for this poor dog’s death will face the consequences.
