As President Trump traveled across the country to signal the country’s reopening, multiple White House staff tested positive for the coronavirus.

President Trump’s Oval Office valet tested positive for the virus, as well as Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary, Katie Miller. Miller is married to Stephen Miller, Trump’s senior adviser.  These positive test led to a flurry of testing in the White House to try to isolate the virus’ spread. Over 77,000 Americans had died from the coronavirus ahead of the announcement about White House staff on May 7 and 8.

11 Secret Service members also tested positive for coronavirus. Documents from the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that 23 employees had recovered from the coronavirus and 60 were self-quarantining.

Dr. Stephen Hahn, the head of the Food and Drug Administration and Dr. Robert Redfield, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are each self-quarantining for 14 days after coming into contact with people exposed to the coronavirus. Dr. Hahn’s contact was with someone who works at the White House. Dr. Anthony Fauci will also commit to a “modified quarantine” after coming into contact, but not close proximity, with a White House staff member who tested positive.

Vice President Pence and President Trump each declined to wear masks at public events in the past week. Trump and Pence regularly get tested for the coronavirus and Trump said that he would get tested daily following news of additional White House outbreaks.
