Company That Employed Dozens of Minors in Slaughterhouses Reaches Agreement with the Feds

A company that has been accused of employing dozens of minors in slaughterhouses on graveyard shifts has reached an agreement with the feds. These allegations of child labor at the slaughterhouse date back to 2016, NBC News reported.

The industrial cleaning company in Grand Island, Nebraska, was accused by federal investigations of hiring dozens of children to clean slaughterhouses during the graveyard shift, according to a federal court filing. The company reportedly reached an agreement with the feds.

Packers Sanitation Services Inc., (PSSI) will review and enhance its existing policies and training materials and hire a third-party consultant to do “quarterly child labor compliance training” and monitor the company’s compliance for three years, NBC News reported. The company will also notify the Labor Department how many employees were terminated as a result of its compliance with child labor laws.

The allegations first began back in 2016 when a local police officer said that he was called to a local middle school because a 14-year-old girl had “injuries to her hands.” A report obtained by NBC News says the allegations were investigated as child abuse. A spokesperson for the Grand Island Police Department said that the injuries were from the child’s work at PSSI.

The resolution with the feds comes a month after the Department of Labor accused the company of employing at least 31 children on the graveyard shifts in slaughterhouses in three states. The children were reportedly told to clean the killing floors and various machines. According to the complaint, these machines included meat and bone-cutting saws and grinding machines. The report also states that at least three children suffered chemical burns.

Slaughterhouses are a horrible place to be, let alone for children to be working there. We hope that this company is punished to the full extent of the law and is shut down.
