Canada’s food system faces challenges from supply chain disruptions, price inflation, and extreme weather events. In 2021, nearly 16% of households experienced food insecurity. Federal programs like the Canada Emergency Response Benefit and the recent grocery store rebate have shown the impact of direct government interventions in ensuring food equity during emergencies. Some experts believe a basic income guarantee could play a key role in reducing food insecurity and promoting sustainability across the food system.
Research conducted in partnership with Coalition Canada, a network of basic income advocacy groups, focused on agriculture and fisheries sectors, involving members of the National Farmers Union, Union Paysanne, EcoTrust Canada, and the Native Fishing Alliance. The study found that a basic income guarantee could significantly impact the economic uncertainties faced by farmers and fishing communities in Canada, contributing to a more just and sustainable food system transition.
A basic income guarantee could reduce economic uncertainty for the most vulnerable workers, who often face seasonal unemployment, low wages, uneven benefits, and unsafe working conditions. By offering financial security and control over employment choices, it can address racialized, classed, and gendered disparities in food systems labor. A basic income guarantee could also build resilience against ongoing stressors like Climate change and extreme weather events while preparing for future emergencies.
Further research and policy efforts are needed to understand how a basic income guarantee intersects with other financial supports and its potential impact on migrant workers. To Support a more just and sustainable food system, advocate for a basic income guarantee and collaborate with Indigenous communities, anti-poverty, food sovereignty, and food justice organizations. Together, we can create a better future for all.
