California’s coastlines, including Orange County, are experiencing an influx of small, blue, jellyfish-like creatures washing ashore. Known commonly as by-the-wind sailors, and scientifically as Velella velella, these fascinating organisms belong to the Cnidaria group, which also includes jellyfish and corals.

Velella velella float through the open ocean using a translucent “sail” on their flat, oval bodies to catch the wind. They are typically washed up on beaches during spring and early summer when strong winds push them ashore. The recent storms in California have brought strong winds, driving these cnidarians toward the shores, where they eventually disintegrate and die.
These intriguing creatures have tentacles that do not sting humans but are used to gather zooplankton or fish eggs for nourishment. With the increasing number of Velella velella washing ashore, it has been suggested that changing weather patterns, such as the warming of the ocean surface linked to El Niño Southern Oscillation events, may be influencing their sightings on land. These events are likely becoming more intense due to Climate change.
So, what can you do to help combat Climate change and protect these unique creatures and our ecosystems? Start by adopting sustainable habits, such as reducing your carbon footprint, conserving water, and supporting clean energy initiatives. Spread the word about the impact of Climate change on our oceans and their inhabitants, and encourage others to take action as well. By working together, we can create a healthier environment and preserve our planet’s diverse ecosystems.
