East New York Farms!, a community driven to organize and unite both adults and youths to address food justice, local sustainable agriculture, and economic development, is making a big impact on our food system!
Their community works relentlessly by running two community-organized farmers markets, a youth internship program that focuses on teaching children about the environment, health, community development, and social justice, and a gardener assistance program which provides the tools new and experienced farmers need to cultivate a successful and plentiful garden. In addition, East New York Farms! runs 3 farms, and a mini-grant program that provides local entrepreneurs with the funds to develop access to healthy food options.
This organization is able to function so effectively because they incorporate local foods produced from community gardens and farms to empower new leaders and help build new communities. Their mission is to instill a sense of empowerment within children and adults by supporting food justice. This is done by supporting locally sustained agriculture and by developing the economic conditions of a community from within.
There latest project is called the Youth Food Justice Network which was started back in 2014. Its central focus is to connect peer organizations in the Northeast region in order to celebrate youth food justice organizations who wish to insist a fair and just food system for all.
East New York Farms! believes that the tools to change our food system are found right within the community. They are truly doing amazing and inspiring work!
