According to CBS Texas reporter Nicole Nielsen, researchers at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge are tracking a surprising local success story: alligators are nesting in North Texas, and they’re here to stay. Once thought to be a rare sight, these reptiles are now a steady presence, with experts estimating around 70 to 100 alligators living in the refuge.
Teams of researchers are spending nesting season combing through more than 1,000 acres of wetlands to identify nests, monitor hatchlings, and collect data. Some nests hold dozens of eggs, though most young won’t survive long due to predators. The work includes tagging, measuring, and even genetic testing to better understand how gators are moving and adapting in this region. The long-term study is expected to wrap up with public findings in 2027.
This resurgence is more than just a wildlife curiosity — it’s an indicator of ecological health. Alligators are apex species in wetland ecosystems, meaning their presence signals a balanced and functioning environment. Where gators thrive, so do birds, fish, and countless other species that depend on clean water and intact habitats. Wetlands themselves are critical natural systems that filter water, reduce flooding, and store carbon, yet they remain some of the most threatened ecosystems in the U.S. due to agriculture, Pollution, and urban expansion.
For North Texans, the return of the alligator is a reminder that humans aren’t the only residents of these landscapes. Protecting wetlands doesn’t just safeguard alligators — it ensures clean water, biodiversity, and climate resilience for communities too.
If you want to help species like these continue to thrive, the best action is to Support Conservation efforts, protect wetlands, and rethink harmful industries that threaten wildlife. Choosing plant-based diets, reducing water waste, and backing habitat restoration projects are simple steps that make a real difference.
