COP25 has started in Spain. The conference is officially called the UN Climate change Conference COP 25. Held in Madrid after being moved from Chile, the conference brings together people from around the globe to address next steps in the UN’s Climate change process. The conference will be December 2-13.
196 registered states and organizations will attend, sending a total of 13,635 participants. According to CNN, with media, business leaders, scientists and activists, the total number will be 25,000.
COP25 is the reason Greta Thunberg traveled by boat back across the Atlantic. She will attend the conference. Thunberg is attending the conference as an activist. She told reporters of her plans for the conference, “We need to work together to make sure that we secure future living conditions for humankind and that we fight for not only ourselves but for our children and for our grandchildren and for every single living being on earth. We will go to COP25 in Madrid and we will continue the fight there to make sure that within those walls, the voices of the people are being heard.”
This meeting includes the same people that gathered to complete the Paris Climate Accord in 2015. This group makes sure that the agreement is implemented and to track progress on Climate change. The 25 stands for 25th annual meeting. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in remarks that the summit is the “point of no return,” in our fight against Climate change.
The United Nation’s posted information about the conference on their website. In response to the question, “What’s important about this COP?” The website reads, “COP25 is the final COP before we enter the defining year of 2020, when many nations must submit new climate action plans. Among the many elements that need to be ironed out is the financing of climate action worldwide. Currently, not enough is being done to meet the three climate goals: reducing emissions 45 per cent by 2030; achieving climate neutrality by 2050 (which means a net zero carbon footprint), and stabilizing global temperature rise at 1.5°C by the end of the century. Because the clock is ticking on Climate change, the world cannot afford to waste more time, and a bold, decisive, ambitious way forward needs to be agreed.”
We will provide additional updates to this post as the conference continues.
