Max Mara Urged to Stop Using Fur Ahead of Fashion Week

Max Mara

As the glamour of Fashion Weeks sweeps across New York, London, Milan, and Paris this February and March, the spotlight isn’t just on couture and trends—it’s also on a movement towards compassion and sustainability in the fashion industry. The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International, in collaboration with the Fur Free Alliance, are spearheading one of the most significant anti-fur campaigns to date, calling upon Max Mara to embrace a fur-free future.

Max Mara is one of the last remaining major fashion houses that continues to endorse the fur trade, despite growing global condemnation and a shifting consumer landscape favoring cruelty-free alternatives. As PJ Smith, the director of fashion policy at Humane Society International and the Humane Society of the United States, emphasizes, the evidence against the fur industry is clear: it is not only cruel to animals but also detrimental to the environment and poses risks to public health.

The Max Mara Fashion Group currently sources mink fur from China and fox and raccoon dog fur from Finland. Shocking revelations from Humane Society International undercover investigations have exposed the conditions in which these animals are kept. From cannibalism to the presence of injured, diseased, and dying creatures, the reality of fur factory farms is a stark reminder of the industry’s inherent cruelty.

Moreover, fur farming has been linked to the propagation of zoonotic diseases like COVID-19 and avian influenza. With hundreds of confirmed outbreaks on fur farms across Europe and North America in recent years, the health risks associated with this practice cannot be understated. Additionally, peer-reviewed research underscores the disproportionately high greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram associated with fur production compared to other materials, further highlighting its environmental toll.

In a world increasingly focused on ethical consumption and mindful living, the demand for fur-free fashion is not new. Max Mara has the opportunity to align itself with the values of compassion, sustainability, and social responsibility that define modern fashion.
