An expose recently revealed the horrible conditions that animals must endure in fur farms across six European nations. Footage from the expose is deeply disturbing. It shows minks, raccoon dogs, and foxes kept in appalling conditions. These animals are farmed for their fur, which is used to make clothing and accessories. Roughly 100 million animals around the world are tortured for this horrifying industry, which is estimated to be worth 22 billion dollars. It is estimated that every year over 10 million animals are bred for fur in Europe alone.
Material for the expose was captured as part of an undercover investigation. The investigation was coordinated by Kristo Muurimaa of the Finnish Animal rights group Oikeutta eläimille. The group was founded in 1995 and is one of Europe’s leading anti-fur groups according to their website. Investigators visited over 100 fur farms during the summer and autumn of 2023. What they found was harrowing. The expose showed conditions in fur farms across six countries. These countries were Denmark, Finland, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Spain. All countries and farms that the undercover investigators exposed were found to violate EU Directive 98/58/EC. This directive concerns animal protection on fur farms in Europe.
Minks are the animals most likely to be farmed for their fur. They are solitary creatures in the wild. However, at fur farms, they are forced to live in close quarters. Indeed, multiple minks may live in one tiny wire cage. This is extremely stressful for the creatures. Footage shows that cannibalism is rampant among minks kept captive on fur farms.
Minks, foxes, and raccoon dogs were also discovered locked in cages with injured, sick, or dead members of their species. Some animals showed infections or injuries. Horrifyingly, some of these injuries were infested with maggots. The animals were also so distraught that there were several sickening instances of self-mutilation.
Twenty European countries have already banned fur farming. This includes fifteen European Union Member States. Many high-end designers have also joined the fur-free movement. In June of 2023, a petition with more than 1.5 million signatures was submitted to the European Commission. This petition is called the Fur Free Europe European Citizens’ Initiative. It demands that fur farming and fur products be banned by the European Commission. The Commission must respond publicly to the petition by the end of 2023. If passed, this petition would lead to the end of fur farms in European Union Member States.
