Portage Animal Protective League recently rescued six horses who were severely neglected.

The investigation is still ongoing, and thus, not all of the details are available. However, it has been released that all six horses were severely malnourished. They were practically skin and bones, nowhere near the healthy weight that they should be at.

One of the horses was determined to be 400 pounds underweight; their malnourishment being so severe that they could not stand on their own.

The owner did surrender the animals. They are currently being investigated to find out whether this was intended neglect or something else.

Chalan Lowry, who is Executive Director at the Portage APL, said, “So the condition of the animals there are a few that are severely emaciated, all of them are underweight. They have been lacking proper nutrition. As we have the horses seen by a veterinarian, look at the blood work, and understand more about their condition. We’ll have more information to decide whether or not we plan to file charges.”

All six horses are currently being cared for and evaluated for any other health concerns. They have a long road ahead, but everyone is hopeful that they may be able to make a full recovery.
