A new petition has been started to end the cruel and abusive treatment of elephants in India. Asian elephants are often overlooked and widely in danger of going extinct entirely.

We all know about the elephants in Africa and how they need our help, but Asian elephants are in even more danger of extinction. There are scarcely 40,000 Asian elephants left, which is equivalent to just 5% of the African elephant population.

Save The Asian Elephants has made it its mission to try to save these precious elephants by bringing awareness to how they are treated. As elephant calves are often captured in India to be used in tourist attractions, sideshows, festivals, and more.

Oftentimes, other herd members are killed during this process as elephants have a strong family unit and all protect the young.

The captured calf is then put in a pen where they are severely abused to instill fear and obedience. Once the elephant’s spirit is broken, their captors begin training them.

This petition aims to urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi to guarantee the right care for captive elephants by ending pajan – the abuse to break elephants’ spirits – and sending the elephants to reputable sanctuaries or the forest, if possible. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Prime Minister David Cameron are asked to help with the endeavor to save these elephants. The petition also urges The Association of British Travel Agents to remove elephant attractions from their tourist holidays.
