PETA has filed a complaint to the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate the University of California and the California National Primate Research Center. This complaint follows numerous counts of animal welfare violations that have been allowed to continue.

PETA obtained federal documents that showed the rampant abuse going on at the university, as well as six incidents that would violate the federal Animal Welfare Act. All incidents in the document result in the animal being seriously injured or dying.

In 2020, UC-Davis experimented on 1,428 primates and 206 rabbits without providing the necessary care for the animals. One of the horrific incidents involved a rabbit not being restrained properly during a procedure. The rabbit ended up falling on the floor and breaking their leg. They later had to be euthanized. No report was made on the incident.

Another act of cruelty involved staff injecting 54 titi monkeys with a vaccine not right for their species. It made the monkeys sick and they all ended up having to be euthanized.

Many of these instances of abuse are the result of poor staff and bad construction of how they do things. Sadly, their mistakes proved to be both painful and fatal for the animals. Thus, PETA is demanding that at the very least, UC Davis researchers be held accountable and abide by animal welfare standards.
