A Durham man is facing felony animal cruelty charges for leaving five dogs in his apartment after being evicted.

There was one adult dog and several puppies, which were all left to fend for themselves after the man moved out of the apartment.

A deputy was called to help get into the padlocked apartment. When he finally entered the apartment, a strong odor of decomposition and feces revealed that something was wrong.

The officer found the dogs’ bodies, decomposed to the point of not being able to determine their death. The apartment was also filled with moldy food and dog feces.

The owner was found and charged with five counts of felony animal cruelty as well as ten other related animal misdemeanors.

The sheriff’s office said, “There is never an excuse to abandon a pet inside a residence. The Animal Protection Society of Durham is here to help. The Animal Protection Society of Durham at the Durham County Animal Shelter is an open-admission shelter. That means that they will take in any domesticated animal in Durham County.”

This is a horrible story of animal abandonment that, like all of the other stories, is completely senseless and cruel. There is never a good reason to abandon a pet when so many resources are available.
