Istanbul is a city that is well known for its kindness towards the stray cats that live there. But it has taken that kindness a step farther and has provided hundreds of stray cats with tiny homes.
It all started when an architect noticed the cats struggling to stay warm. Seeing this, she started to put out plastic boxes for them to sleep in, but the city removed them as they were an eyesore.
Didem Gokgoz, an interior architect, had an idea to better provide shelter without creating an eyesore. She teamed up with others who tried to care for the Istanbul cat population and took her idea to the mayor.
After getting permission and a promise that the cat houses would not be removed, Gokgoz continued on with her plan.
Together with her friends, she created small cat houses that would be chained to the ground. These houses looked like perfect miniatures and were colorfully painted and whimsical looking.
Once the first houses were designed, other areas of Istanbul started asking that she build houses for their cats.
The cats also responded positively to their new living spaces, quickly moving in by the dozens. This allows volunteers to also spay and neuter the cats as they come. As well as look for any diseases or injuries.
Istanbul has once again shown the rest of the world how to be kind to its feline population. Hopefully, the rest of the world can follow in its footsteps.
