A cathedral in London held a memorial service for a local stray cat that was part of the congregation. Per the New York Daily News, the cat lived at the church for 12 years and died on September 30.
Doorkins Magnificat came to Southwark Cathedral in 2008 and stayed on until her death as the cat in residence at the house of worship. Doorkins encounter hundreds of congregants and guests, including Queen Elizabeth II. The cat was also buried in the churchyard.

Southwark Cathedral Dean Andrew Nunn told the congregation during the service, per the Guardian, “In more normal times, we often host memorial services for the great and the good. But I don’t think there’s ever been a service for a cat.”

Nunn called her “a godsend” and said she was responsible for bringing new members to the church. “She arrived, she entered and we made her welcome. People concluded that if this little cat is welcome, maybe I am too,” Nunn told the Guardian.
