As India becomes the latest country to lockdown and order quarantine for citizens, captive elephants in the country are feeling relief according to animal activists. In Kerala, elephants won’t be forced to participate in traditional festivals held in March and April.
In previous years, elephants have been integral parts of festivals. But to the dismay of activists, elephants often run off or endanger people during the festivals. Over 1,000 festivals have been called off due to the coronavirus lockdown.
V K Venkitachalam, an Animal rights activist, told the Deccan Herald that elephants got “relieved from the extensive physical and mental torture during the festivals. Elephants were forced to remain standing and walking for hours with out giving adequate rest. Some popular elephants used to be transported extensively across the state during this season for festivals. It was the mental and physical torture that often result in the elephants running amok and risking lives.”
Thrissur Pooram, a large festival scheduled for May 3, has yet to be called off. Thrissur Pooram traditionally uses up to 300 elephants.
