During the coronavirus pandemic, most of us are left pretty hopeless to sit at home. Millions have lost their jobs and we have to do our part by practicing social distancing. However, essential employees are working tirelessly to fight COVID-19 and save lives. Healthcare workers in particular are risking their lives and saving the lives of those infected. To thank them for their dedication and hard work, people are finding unique ways of thanking them.

In New York City, people come out to their balconies at 7pm to give them a round of applause. People in the U.K. are donating free meals to health workers. And companies and celebrities like Beyond Meat and Cardi B are also donating meals. But animal shelters are honoring them in the cutest way possible.

Hearts and Bones Rescue in Texas and Hope Rescue in Wales are naming rescue animals after healthcare workers fighting on the front lines of the pandemic.

Healthcare heroes can be nominated by their friends or family members. The rescue names an animal after them and shares their story, helping people see just how hard healthcare heroes are working. The adoptable dog above, rescued by Hearts and Bones, is named after Dr. Ryan who works in the ICU and emergency department. He’s cried with patients and puts the needs of strangers before his own, according to his wife Amanda.

Hope Rescue named the stray they recently rescued after the entire David Ferguson neonatal unit at a hospital. The rescuers say: “As a charity we are struggling at the moment and can’t really support our hero NHS workers, so this is a small something to show our support for them.”

It’s a sweet way to show the healthcare workers they are appreciated and that people are thinking of them as they fight on the frontlines of this pandemic.
