Animal rights groups have started using virtual reality headsets to show what they witness in factory farms. The technology allows a true inside look at factory farms. Wired recently did a story on Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) as they entered a factory farm to film.

While the activists are trespassing to record the footage, it means millions of people do not have to in order to see the plight of animals in factory farms. DxE videos show pigs crammed together in cages, or locked into tiny stalls by themselves. These are gestation crates, but the pigs can’t turn or move inside them, according to Wired.

Animal Equality, an animal rights group with 8 international branches, has also started using VR technology. Their first video was viewed by 63 million people. The group refers to the 3-D films as iAnimal. Because the video is attached to the person, it does allow a 360-view of the barn, animals and every horror inside.

Founder of Animal Equality Jose Valle said of the technology, “I had always wished I could bring people into the facilities with me, so they could see them with their own eyes. The experience is just not the same with traditional video.”

Direct Action Everywhere founder Wayne Hseing says the video allows activists to tell a stronger story, he said, “The meat industry always complains that we’re using selective footage, narrow vantage points and editing to make things seem worse. But with VR, you’re seeing exactly what we saw and hearing exactly what we heard.”
