“I Don’t Care” Said Senior Dog’s Owner Before Abandoning Him

Senior dog

There are many reasons people are forced to surrender their pets. However, in most cases, it is an extremely sad traumatic event for both parties. Sadly though, sometimes animals are cruelly abandoned by their owners despite alternative options existing.

This was the case for Brandon, a sweet 14-year-old senior dog left with Orange County Animal Services in Florida. In a video posted by @uniquelyk9, Brandon can be seen at the shelter. In overlay text, the poster explained how he got there. Despite being with his former owner since he was a puppy, Brandon recently surrendered. While the staff does not detail the previous owners’ circumstances that led them to surrender Brandon, they do share that despite their best efforts to persuade her otherwise, her parting words regarding Brandon were “I don’t care.”

I dont care were the last words Brandon heard from his owner who surrendered him because she didnt want to take care of him anymore. Now at 14 he has never lived outside of his home he had since he was a puppy and could use our help to get his second chance. Can we find him the retirement home he deserves? #adoptdontshop #shelterdog #rescuedog #dogsoftiktok #doglover #seniordog #adoptadog #orlandoflorida #seniordogsoftiktok

In the video, the text explains that the staff showed her the many dogs waiting for forever homes at the shelter. They also explained that for senior dogs, shelters can be extremely stressful. Additionally, senior dogs are far less likely to get adopted than their younger counterparts. Despite this, the owner chose to leave Brandon.

While senior dogs face particularly challenging circumstances in shelters, they are an amazing addition to many homes. Although they may not shine at the shelter, due to the additional stress, many senior dogs are already housebroken, mellower, and better socialized than younger dogs. When adopting a dog or any other pet, always remember that it is a lifelong commitment.
