LaRosa’s Pizzeria has developed a signature vegan pizza line that they plan to permanently add to the menu at all of their 66 locations.
This isn’t just your average vegetable pizza, LaRosa’s has taken years to create a small line of signature plant-based pizzas with vegan pepperoni, sausage, and cheese that tastes just like the real thing.
Connie Banning, the research and development chef, said, “People that are on a flexitarian diet or a plant-based exploration want something that looks like the real thing. They want something they can identify with.”
It took a lot of trial and error to find plant-based substitutes that still tasted and acted the same way that the regular ingredients did. Eventually, they were able to create a line of vegan pizzas with the traditional taste they had been looking for.
The restaurant released their first plant-based pizzas in a few test stores to analyze their customers’ reviews and make sure they had created just the right kinds of pizzas.
Mark LaRosa, president and chief culinary officer of Larosa’s, said, “The first four weeks we had really good sales, and we had great customer feedback. We got hundreds of responses through the surveys, and we were right on target with what our guests were asking for.”
While it is so exciting that there is a new option for plant-based pizzas, it is important to know that their chicken is made with egg whites, making it vegetarian-friendly but not vegan-friendly. The cheese, pepperoni, and sausage, however, are vegan.
