Known for its hot dogs, deep-dish pizza, and Italian beef sandwiches, most Chicagoans would agree that their city’s most iconic eats aren’t exactly vegan-friendly.
Of course, that’s not to say that there aren’t plenty of places to get delicious plant-based food in the windy city. Veggie Grill is set to expand to Chicago later this year, for one thing, and the large burger chain, Epic Burger, now offers the Beyond Burger, a 100 percent plant-based patty that “bleeds“.
It appears, however, that the city is looking to level up their plant-based game. How? Why, by partnering up with plant-based company Impossible Foods to host a clandestine and very punny “Meateasy.”
A Meateasy, for those wondering, is a 1920s-inspired speakeasy event in which attendees meet in a top-secret location and feast on the Impossible Burger while basking in decade-inspired fabulousness.
Here’s what you need to know: the Impossible crew concocted a fake premise: that the Chicago Sausage Guild wants to keep Chicago a sausage town. In retaliation, the folks behind the award-winning Impossible Burger felt the need to launch a speakeasy, so that all the gourmet-loving foodies in Chicago could eat the vegan burger with abandon.
While the actual Meateasy took place on October 25th, it’s clear that the city and its plant-based brethren are looking to make a statement that vegan food is the sustainable fuel of the future. In fact, the Meateasy is only the first branded experience that Impossible Foods will have in collaboration with Wieden+Kennedy, an advertising agency.
“It’s exciting to work with an innovative mission-based company like Impossible Foods,” said W+K Creative Director Jason Campbell. “We crafted an immersive piece of storytelling across multiple mediums with the culmination being the discovery of a secret Meateasy. It’s a game and experience all rolled up in one. This is the type of work that gets both us and our partners at Impossible really excited and exactly the sort of stuff we’ll keep doing together.”
