According to AdWeek, Swedish retailer Ikea announced that it will increase its production of plant-based options and reduce meat in a bid to help the environment. The retailer is known for its furniture, but it also sells an astonishing number of meals in its retail stores.

The company committed to making half of its meals plant-based by 2025 and 80% non-red meat. The company also said that 80% of its packaged foods will be plant-based. 680 million shoppers bought food at Ikea stores in 2019.

“Research confirms the importance of making sustainable products affordable and desirable, and Ikea can really make a positive difference here,” said Lena Pripp-Kovac, chief sustainability officer at Inter Ikea Group. “The more sustainable choice shouldn’t be a luxury for the few. It should be part of people’s everyday life.”

Ikea announced earlier this year that it would introduce plant-based meatballs. Read more plant-based news in One Green Planet, including KFC’s Beyond Meat partnership.
