IKEA announced that will introduce a meat-free version of its famous Swedish meatballs as part of the retailer’s push for a more sustainable business.

The plant-based meatball has 4% of the footprint of the meat version of the meatball. The Swedish furniture giant said that the plant-based version includes pea protein, oats, apples, and potatoes.

Plant-based meatballs will hit stores in August in the European Union, and then roll out to other markets in the Asia Pacific and Middle East Regions. A launch for North America is also planned.

Sharla Halvorson, health and sustainability manager for the IKEA food business globally, said, “At IKEA we sell more than one billion meatballs every year. If we were to convert about 20% of our meatball sales to plant balls that would mean around 8% reduction of our climate footprint for the food business at IKEA.”

Customers can also buy frozen versions of the vegan meatballs to take home and prepare.
