The race to secure the raw materials powering our clean energy future just got a significant global push. At their recent summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, G7 leaders announced a sweeping new coordination effort aimed at reducing dependence on any single country for critical minerals, those essential building blocks behind everything from electric vehicles to wind turbines to the devices in your pocket.
Why does this matter to you and to the planet? Because the materials needed to build a sustainable clean energy infrastructure are not evenly distributed, and right now, one country holds an extraordinary amount of power over that supply. China currently controls around 90 percent of the world’s processed rare earths and permanent magnets, a reality that sent shockwaves through global industries last year when Beijing imposed export restrictions that disrupted countless sectors at once.
The G7’s response is both ambitious and pragmatic. According to Reuters, leaders agreed to reduce reliance on any single non-G7 supplier for rare earths and permanent magnets to below 60 percent by 2030, with a longer term goal of reaching 50 percent as quickly as possible. To get there, they are launching coordinated stockpiling efforts, a new shared policy platform, and pilot programs focused initially on lithium and nickel, two minerals absolutely central to battery technology and the renewable energy transition.
The International Energy Agency will play a key role, providing market analysis and early warnings when supply disruptions loom. Meanwhile, G7 development finance institutions will pool resources with the private sector to fund mining and processing projects worldwide, with 195 new ventures already announced and over $74 billion in sustainability focused investment committed since the start of 2026.
Recycling is also on the table, with leaders pledging to dramatically scale up domestic recycling capacity for critical materials by the decade’s end. This kind of circular approach recognizes that the environment pays a steep price for extraction, and smarter use of what already exists is always a win.
