IKEA has a company-wide plan to become more sustainable. Just four months ago, they banned plastic in their stores in Israel, a move that they will hopefully make in other countries as well. Now, they’re making more sustainable efforts by adding plant-based options to their menu. Many companies, including Starbucks are heading in this direction because plant-based eating is one of the best things we can do for the planet.

IKEA will be adding a vegan version of their classic beloved Swedish meatballs to stores this August!

Their traditional Swedish meatballs are “typically served with cream sauce, mashed potatoes, and lingonberry jam, have been offered in its stores for more than 35 years and have become an iconic part of the company.” Although they already offer veggie balls, these are meant to be a closer alternative to their Swedish meatballs.

Managing director of IKEA Food Services AB, Michael La Cour says: “It is a really exciting industry! Looking at the quality of the products that we have been tasting I am looking forward to serve a delicious plant based meatball made from alternative protein at IKEA. I hope that the many meatball lovers out there will like it as well.”

Find these meatballs in stores in August, but in the meantime try these homemade recipes from the Food Monster App:
