The brand Better Naked has changed its famous plant-based Kiev to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The democratic country has been under attack since Vladamir Putin sent troops to invade on February 24, 2022. Loud explosions have been happening all over the country, and fire and clouds of smoke can be seen coming from everywhere.
The company, owned by UK food producer Kinnebrogue, stands in solidarity with Ukraine and will donate 50% of the product’s profits to Ukraine. They will donate to the humanitarian relief effort in Ukraine and begin with a £10,000 donation to multiple charities like the Red Cross.
Chicken Kiev is a dish made from chicken fillet rolled in butter, coated with bread crumbs, and then baked. The famous dish originated in Kiev, which is how it got its name.
‘Kiev’ was the city’s spelling when it was under Soviet rule. Since the Ukrainian war with Russia began in 2014, they have been using ‘Kyiv,’ which is derived from Ukrainian instead of Russian.
In 2014, the UK began referring to its embassy as being based in Kyiv. Ukraine has urged all English media and organizations to make this switch for years. So this switch by Better Naked has been a long time coming.
The popular plant-based version from Better Naked is a delicious alternative for people who love the Ukrainian dish. The rebranded plant-based chicken will now be sold as ‘Garlic Kyiv.’
The Better Naked Garlic Kyiv uses pea protein, which is a complete protein, to make the chicken. It is available throughout UK supermarkets.
The chief strategy officer of Finnebrogue, Jago Pearson, said in a statement, “The world is appalled by the disgraceful events being perpetrated by the Putin regime in Ukraine. All our hearts go out to the Ukrainian people as they defend their homeland and stand up for the principles of self-determination and free, liberal democracy.”
“So many of us in the UK feel utterly helpless, but still determined to do what little we can. That’s why at Finnebrogue we are donating to the humanitarian effort and renaming our Better Naked Garlic Kyiv in recognition of the Ukrainian people’s brave defence of their proud nation.”
