A recent TikTok trend claims that taking vitamin D and magnesium supplements together leads to better sleep, reduced anxiety, and overall enhanced wellness. But according to Men’s Health, those promises don’t really hold up to science.

Registered dietitians Kim Yawitz and Lara Clevenger, interviewed by Perri O. Blumberg for the article, explain that while both nutrients are essential, there’s no strong evidence suggesting that taking them together amplifies their effects. Vitamin D helps with calcium absorption, immune function, and muscle health, while magnesium is involved in over 300 biochemical processes including heart rhythm, blood pressure, and nerve function. Still, the experts agree: unless a medical professional has diagnosed a deficiency, supplements aren’t usually necessary.

The viral claims may stem from the fact that vitamin D and magnesium interact within the body. Magnesium helps convert vitamin D into its active form, and vitamin D may slightly enhance magnesium absorption. But even though they’re a team player duo, there’s little evidence that doubling up leads to supercharged results.

Most healthy individuals can meet their nutritional needs with diet alone. Magnesium is found in leafy greens, legumes, and pumpkin seeds. Vitamin D comes from sunlight, fortified foods, and, for non-vegans, fish and dairy. For those following a plant-based lifestyle, getting enough vitamin D from food can be tricky, so fortified plant milks and mushrooms exposed to UV light are great alternatives.

If you suspect a deficiency, talk to your healthcare provider. Don’t rely on influencers—trust evidence and ethical nutrition instead.
