A village in China worked on hitting ambitious energy targets in 2020. The city of Yiwu, known as “Christmas town,” is known for its holiday manufacturing, including decorations and ornaments.
But authorities switched off the lights in mid-December, according to CNN, to help meet energy targets. Officials in Zhejiang turned the lights off to meet five-year energy targets set by the central government.
Manufacturers said that the changes made it hard for them to fulfill orders in time for Christmas. “We have a lot of orders, but we don’t have enough time to make them,” Ma Hairu, who makes paper decorations, said at the time.

Government officials noted that towns had set up systems to reduce emissions. “There is no shortage of electricity supply [in Zhejiang]. Some places in the province adopted measures themselves to restrict electricity use to save energy and reduce emissions,” Zhao Chenxin, secretary general of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said.
The province was trying to cut energy by 17 percent compared to 2015 levels to hit the targets. Heating, street lights, and electricity were all cut off to help meet the targets.
