The Trump administration has proposed a major rollback of wildlife protections that could spell disaster for endangered animals across the U.S. According to a recent Agence France-Presse report, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have suggested redefining “harm” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to exclude habitat destruction.

For decades, the ESA has been a vital tool in saving animals like the bald eagle, gray wolf, and humpback whale. A big part of that success came from a broad interpretation of “harm,” which included destroying forests, wetlands, and rivers that species depend on. Environmental groups argue the proposed change would gut this safeguard, paving the way for mining, drilling, logging, and other human activities in areas currently protected.

Earthjustice, an environmental law group, has strongly opposed the move, calling habitat destruction a “common-sense” form of harm and promising to challenge the proposal in court. The Center for Biological Diversity warned that the change would be devastating for wildlife, with species like spotted owls and sea turtles losing critical habitat.

Trump’s administration has consistently pushed to remove environmental protections in favor of economic development. This includes calls to open up protected landscapes for energy exploitation and proposals to slash the Environmental Protection Agency’s workforce by over 60%.

Right now, the proposed rule is open for public comment, but time is short.

We can’t protect wildlife if we don’t protect where they live. Speak up while the comment period is open. Support organizations defending the Endangered Species Act. Choose plant-based products, boycott brands linked to habitat loss, and stay loud about preserving nature—for animals, for ecosystems, and for future generations.
