According to The Guardian reporters Oliver Milman and Dharna Noor, the Trump administration has given fossil fuel companies a direct way to bypass clean air protections. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set up a special email address where companies that burn coal or oil can request an exemption from pollution standards under the Clean Air Act.

These exemptions could let power plants off the hook for rules that limit mercury, arsenic, and other harmful emissions linked to tens of thousands of deaths every year. Companies have until Monday to send their requests, which Trump himself will review. If approved, exemptions could last up to two years and be renewed.

Critics argue this move is a blatant attempt to help polluters sidestep public health laws. Laurie Williams from the Sierra Club said these air quality protections are vital for community health and there’s “no legitimate basis” to suspend them. Vickie Patton of the Environmental Defense Fund called it an “extreme and improper abuse” of the Clean Air Act, noting that Pollution control technology has existed for years.

The EPA, now led by Lee Zeldin, claims the exemptions are legal under a rarely used section of the law. However, environmental groups are pushing back hard. The Environmental Defense Fund has already filed a Freedom of Information Act request to uncover who applies for these exemptions and has promised legal action if needed.

This move follows Trump’s repeated promises to expand fossil fuel production, despite overwhelming scientific evidence that burning coal, oil, and gas drives the worsening climate crisis.

Now more than ever, it’s important to Support renewable energy, cut down on fossil fuels, and demand real action for clean air. Every choice we make — from the products we buy to the politicians we back — can push the world toward a greener, healthier future.
