Trump’s New Climate Cuts Could Hit American Taxpayers Hard

Donald Trump’s return to the White House has brought sweeping changes to U.S. climate policy—and not in a good way for the environment or the economy. As reported by Deutsche Welle‘s Stuart Braun in DW, Trump’s first-day executive orders declared a “national energy emergency” and halted offshore wind projects while attacking clean energy regulations. The move is being positioned as a boost for oil, gas, and coal, but experts say the real cost will be felt by American taxpayers and workers.

The orders coincided with new Environment Protection Agency head Lee Zeldin’s vow to drive a “dagger through the heart of climate-change religion.” Zeldin also froze $20 billion in clean energy funding and grants, though a federal judge recently blocked the cancellation of $14 billion in green projects due to lack of evidence of wrongdoing.

These rollbacks come at a time when clean energy had been creating jobs at more than double the rate of the wider labor market. According to the Clean Investment Monitor, over 400,000 clean energy jobs were created after the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, with most projects announced in Republican districts. Georgia alone gained over 43,000 green jobs and $30 billion in investment.

Analysts warn that cutting climate funding and dismantling green incentives will trigger higher living costs and fewer job opportunities. Meanwhile, the Boston Consulting Group estimates that continued Global warming of 3°C could shrink global GDP by up to 34%—a level of economic damage that could have otherwise ended extreme poverty.

If these policy reversals stand, Americans could face not just rising climate disaster costs, but the collapse of a thriving green economy.

Let’s not wait for another wildfire or hurricane to remind us what’s at stake. Support clean energy, vote with the planet in mind, and make sustainable choices in your daily life. Every plant-based meal, solar panel, or bike ride counts—especially when policymakers won’t.
