Despite repeated claims by the Trump administration about a looming U.S. energy emergency, experts say those fears are simply unfounded. As reported by Julia Jacobo at ABC News, there is currently no evidence to suggest an energy shortage or crisis is occurring in the country.
Since returning to office, President Trump has declared a national energy emergency and pushed a fossil fuel-heavy agenda aimed at boosting oil and gas production. However, experts like Gregory Nemet from the University of Wisconsin and Noah Kaufman from Columbia University argue that the U.S. has more than enough energy supply. Gas prices are average, there are no widespread blackouts, and oil production remains at record levels—higher than during the Obama or Biden administrations.
“The world doesn’t need more oil,” said Nemet, pointing to the growing shift toward renewables in Europe and Asia. Global demand for fossil fuels is falling as solar, wind, battery storage, and electric vehicles continue to grow. Meanwhile, countries like China are racing ahead with clean energy infrastructure, leaving the U.S. behind.
Cornell’s Bob Howarth says there’s little incentive for oil companies to drill more, especially with prices staying steady around $66 per barrel. Even the industry isn’t calling for more drilling. So why the panic? Experts suggest the “energy crisis” narrative is being used as cover to fast-track fossil fuel projects, cut environmental regulations, and reverse recent climate progress.
David Konisky of Indiana University calls it a “disingenuous” move to justify environmental rollbacks. And as Matt Huber from Syracuse University puts it bluntly: “We don’t have an energy crisis. What we have is a climate crisis.”
If we want a livable future, we need to stop chasing oil and start supporting real solutions—renewable energy, sustainable transport, and climate justice. Choosing plants over Pollution, and clean over dirty energy, isn’t just the right move—it’s the only one.
