Nuclear energy is heading offshore as Japan invests in floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs), marking a bold shift in the quest for sustainable energy. According to Core Energy, the UK-based company CORE POWER has secured $80 million from Japanese maritime firms Onomichi Dockyard and Imabari Shipbuilding to develop FNPPs, which will be tethered to the ocean floor. This ambitious initiative is part of a larger effort to introduce zero-emissions nuclear power into the maritime industry.
The technology behind FNPPs involves molten chloride fast reactors, a cutting-edge nuclear innovation that could see its first demonstration as early as 2026. CORE POWER, founded in 2018, is leading the charge with Support from major players like Southern Company, TerraPower, and Orano. If all goes according to plan, these floating reactors could be fully operational by the early 2030s, providing carbon-free energy to ports, shipping lanes, and other industrial hubs.
While FNPPs might sound like a futuristic concept, they are quickly gaining traction in the energy sector. A survey by the International Chamber of Shipping revealed that 9% of top executives expect nuclear-powered ships to be in commercial operation within a decade. Mikal Bøe, CEO of CORE POWER, believes floating nuclear plants could power the production of green fuels while offering true zero-emissions transport solutions for the shipping industry.
Although nuclear power is often touted as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, environmental concerns remain. The potential risks of accidents, radioactive waste disposal, and oceanic ecological impact must be carefully weighed. Instead of investing billions in nuclear energy, a safer and more sustainable future lies in solar, wind, and plant-based biofuels. Supporting renewables and reducing dependence on energy-intensive industries is the real solution to Climate change. If we want a truly green future, let’s advocate for clean energy that doesn’t come with nuclear’s baggage.
