Nuclear energy is making headlines as it hits record levels in 2025, with estimates suggesting it will account for nearly 10% of global electricity production—a 30-year peak. Advocates herald it as a key “clean energy” source that operates without carbon emissions during use, making it a strong candidate in the fight against climate change.
The surge in nuclear power is driven largely by China’s growing energy demand, spurred by advances in artificial intelligence and the expansion of data centers. Major tech players such as Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are shifting gears from exclusive reliance on renewable energy by investing in nuclear power to meet their soaring energy needs while pursuing carbon neutrality.
However, while nuclear plants offer consistent, low-carbon energy, they also come with challenges. Environmental concerns remain significant due to indirect emissions from uranium mining, radioactive waste management, and the lingering risks of major accidents similar to the historical Chernobyl disaster. Critics argue that new nuclear projects are costly, time-intensive, and face lengthy permitting processes compared to the rapid deployment of solar and wind energy. In fact, recent reports have highlighted that renewable energies continue to outperform nuclear power in cost and deployment speed.
A promising development within the nuclear sector is the advent of small modular reactors (SMRs). These advanced reactors, with capacities of less than 300 MW, are seen by some as safer, cheaper, and quicker to build. Yet, with only two SMR projects built worldwide so far, and both experiencing delays and budget issues, questions remain about their scalability and commercial viability.
As the world grapples with the dual challenge of energy security and Climate change, expanding our nuclear capacity presents both opportunities and risks. It is clear that no single energy source can be the silver bullet. Embracing a diverse, balanced mix that includes nuclear, renewables, and energy efficiency improvements might be the most pragmatic way forward.
