As the harsh Ukrainian winter approaches, more than 300 feral dogs near the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant are set to receive vital protection. These animals, descendants of pets left behind after the 1986 nuclear disaster, have endured years of hardship, and the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war has only worsened their plight. Now, a joint effort by Farm & Yard, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International (SPCAI), and the Clean Futures Fund (CFF) is providing hope in the form of insulated shelters.
The dogs have struggled to survive in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, an area with crumbling infrastructure, little food, and harsh weather. Many have taken refuge in the nuclear plant’s remains, but this is no longer a safe option. With the added danger of war and a lack of basic resources, these resilient animals are in desperate need of help.
To address this, Farm & Yard has donated 20 CozyCube™ insulated shelters, which will be placed by the CFF in protected areas to offer the dogs safety from the extreme cold. This initiative is part of a larger collaboration among the organizations, aimed at extending the lives and improving the well-being of these animals.
“These shelters are more than just protection from the freezing temperatures—they offer a lifeline, giving these animals a safe place to rest and feel secure. While it’s a small step, it’s a powerful way to bring hope to these resilient dogs,” said Lori Kalef, Director of Programs at SPCAI. As the conflict continues, this project provides immediate relief and long-term hope for the Chernobyl dogs, ensuring they have the shelter, food, and care needed to survive another brutal winter.
