In the wake of the devastating war in Ukraine, countless lives have been thrown into chaos, including those of animals both domestic and wild. Amidst the turmoil emerges in the form of a new documentary film, “Saving the Animals of Ukraine,” set to air on PBS’s Nature. Directed by Anton Ptushkin, the film sheds light on the remarkable resilience of both human and animal inhabitants of war-torn Ukraine.
Ptushkin conceived the idea for the film in February 2022, inspired by footage of courageous individuals striving to protect not only themselves but also their beloved animals amidst the chaos. One tale featured in the documentary follows the journey of a Jack Russell Terrier, originally a young boy’s pet, who transforms into a bomb-sniffing hero, symbolizing Ukraine’s unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
Another narrative explores the harrowing ordeal of a lion, subjected to the horrors of a Russian missile attack while confined to a cage on the front lines. Suffering from severe PTSD as a result, the lion’s journey to recovery at an animal rehabilitation center serves as a poignant reminder of the shared trauma experienced by animals and humans alike.
The film also highlights the incredible survival instincts of animals left stranded without food or water for prolonged periods. One such story follows the remarkable 60-day ordeal of a cat stranded on the seventh floor of an apartment building.
Through these compelling narratives, “Saving the Animals of Ukraine” offers a glimpse into the spirit of the Ukrainian people and their commitment to protecting the lives of all creatures.
